Donor Egg IVFThe need to consider the use of donor eggs to achieve parenthood is an unpleasant and disturbing circumstance in most cases. Sometimes a woman cannot user her eggs in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle for numerous reasons. Some delay childbearing until they have established their careers and fertility is directly associated with age. As women age, the number of quality eggs available declines, until the menopause is reached, when no eggs that will fertilize and develop remain. In fact, success rates are so low that most fertility programs will not accept women in their forties to their IVF programs, unless donor eggs are used. Other causes of "poor egg quality" can be genetic or the result of medical treatments such as cancer chemotherapy or high dose radiation. The good news is that the success rates using donor eggs are equal to the "age group" of the donor. For example, when the eggs of a twenty two year old are used in a cycle with a forty-year-old recipient, success rates are equal to the twenty two year olds age group, which in some cases exceed 50%. There is debate as to the maximum age of the egg recipient. As long as the uterus is intact, and there are no additional medical problems, women in their fifties, and older, can carry and deliver children. The cycles of the donor and recipient must be synchronized using injectable hormones. The recipient's endometrium must thicken and become more vascular to accept and support the developing embryo. The recipient receives hormonal medications to mimic the hormonal increase that accompanies normal ovulation. Egg donors must undergo extensive physical, genetic, and psychological screening. They are tested for common STDs, and AIDS. The donor undergoes ovulation induction with gonadotropin hormone (FSH) to cause the development of several eggs. Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved and combined with the recipient husband's sperm. Three to five days later, or when the embryologist and physician judge the embryos are ready, the embryos are transferred to the egg recipient in a painless procedure. Egg donors are often college students and young
women who want to help others achieve their dream of having a child.
Donors receive monetary compensation to offset the time and inconvenience
associated with the donation process.
