Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
The HSG is an outpatient procedure performed at the hospital radiology
department. Radiopaque die is injected into the uterus using a catheter.
Sequential X-rays are taken as the dye flows from the
uterus back through the fallopian tubes. If there is a constriction,
or blockage of the fallopian tubes, it shows on the x-ray as a collection of die where its
flow was impeded. Uterine structural abnormalities can also be identified.
Hysteroscopy
The hysteroscopy provides direct visualization of the uterine cavity
by filling the uterus with gas and directly examining it via the hysteroscope.
The hysteroscope is "like a telescope" and allows the fertility specialist to identify abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions and
other abnormalities. The reproductive surgeon can often treat these
conditions during the hysteroscopy avoiding the need for a repeat
procedure.
Hydrosonogram
The hydrosonogram is useful in identifying polyps, fibroids, and
other uterine abnormalities. Saline solution is injected into the
uterus causing
it to expand and the
ultrasound vaginal probe is inserted. The saline solution increases
the contrast making abnormalities more evident.
