Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)
When the male partner is the source of the couple's infertility, ZIFT may be indicated. In ZIFT, a combination of GIFT and IVF, the eggs are collected and fertilized in the laboratory, and then transferred back to the woman's fallopian tubes for development. The ZIFT process involves ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and zygote transfer. ICSI has reduced the frequency and need for this procedure. Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) Like IVF, GIFT
combines the sperm and the egg to allow for fertilization. In GIFT;
however, the process occurs in the woman's healthy fallopian tubes,
the natural site of fertilization. The steps involved in GIFT are
ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and transfer of the egg and sperm.
With increasing success in IVF, fewer cases of GIFT are being performed.
