Louisiana Donor Egg IVF ProgramThe need to consider the use of donor eggs to achieve parenthood is an unpleasant and disturbing circumstance in most cases. Sometimes a woman cannot user her eggs in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle for numerous reasons. Some delay childbearing until they have established their careers and fertility is directly associated with age. As women age, the number of quality eggs available declines, until the menopause is reached, when no eggs that will fertilize and develop remain. Other causes of "poor egg quality" can be genetic or the result of medical treatments such as cancer chemotherapy or high dose radiation. Our Louisiana donor egg program provides new hope to these couples making a genetically related child (father) a reality.IVF success rates are so low in older women that many fertility programs will not accept women in their forties to their IVF programs, unless donor eggs are used. We admit older women to our IVF program only after clearly explaining that the chances of success, unless donor eggs are used, are extremely low. Donor egg success rates are equal to the "age group" of the donor and are typically very high. For example, when the eggs of a twenty two year old are used in a cycle with a forty-year-old recipient, success rates are equal to the twenty two year olds age group, which in some cases exceed 50%. There is debate as to the maximum age of the egg recipient. As long as the uterus is intact, and there are no additional medical problems, women in their fifties, and older, can carry and deliver children. In fact, some programs have produced successful pregnancies for women in their sixties. The maximum age of a donor egg recipient is at the discretion of each individual clinic. During a donor egg IVF cycle, the cycles of the egg donor and egg recipient must be synchronized using injectable hormones. The recipient's endometrium must thicken and become more vascular to accept and support the developing embryo. The recipient receives hormonal medications to mimic the hormonal increase that accompanies normal ovulation. This causes endometrial development among many other actions. Egg donors, admitted to our Donor Egg Program, must undergo extensive physical, genetic, and psychological screening. They are tested for common STDs, and AIDS. The egg donor undergoes ovulation induction with gonadotropin hormone (FSH) to cause the development of several eggs. During the stimulation, our egg donors must come to our Baton Rouge, Louisiana fertility clinic for routine monitoring of estradiol hormone levels and ultrasound. This information documents that the eggs are developing properly, provides dosing information, and helps insure safety. Once the donated eggs are mature, they are retrieved and combined with the recipient husband's sperm at our Louisiana Donor Egg Program clinic in Baton Rouge, LA. Three to five days later, or when the embryologist and physician judge the embryos are ready, they are transferred to the egg recipient in a painless procedure. Egg donors are often college students and young
women who want to help others achieve their dream of having a child.
Donors receive monetary compensation to offset the time and inconvenience
associated with the donation process. We recently affiliated with the World Egg Bank which also has financing packages available for egg donation couples. You can view many of our donors online at the World Egg Bank.
